Visiting a gynecologist for the first time can feel intimidating. Many young women worry about what will happen during the consultation, or if it will be uncomfortable. Knowing what to expect can ease anxiety and help you make the most of your appointment.

What age should the first visit take place?

  • Recommended after the first period, especially if there are irregular cycles or painful periods.

  • Definitely before becoming sexually active or when contraception advice is needed.

How to prepare

  • Bring your health insurance card and any past medical reports.

  • Write down any questions you may have (about cycles, contraception, sexuality).

  • Wear comfortable clothing.

What happens during the visit

  • Friendly discussion about your health history and concerns.

  • Basic physical or pelvic exam (if appropriate for age/symptoms).

  • Pap smear is usually recommended after age 21.

  • Time to ask any personal questions in a safe, confidential environment.

Why it matters

  • Early prevention and guidance.

  • Building a relationship of trust with your gynecologist.

  • Learning healthy habits for reproductive wellbeing.
